It’s October 1st and I get to listen to 31 days of Halloween music! This is my favorite season, my favorite month, and my favorite holiday. You get to listen to funky music ranging from surfer rock to psychobilly to 50s pop to heavy metal to the just plain weird.
This super mix includes all of the standards and some inspired new additions to the canon of Halloween music. The mix is currently at 169 songs but it’s always growing. So if I missed your favorite, leave a message in the comments and it’ll get added.
For the entire month of October this playlist will be on the main page, left hand side. Ya know, the orange and black one.
If you have and Android or other non-Apple phone, you can listen to the playlist on the go here at GrooveShark..
The top 20 are ordered in what I think are the 20 best and essential Halloween songs out there.
1. Bobby “Boris” Picket and the Crypt Kickers – The Monster Mash
This is the quintessential Halloween song and I’m not sure if any song will ever beat it. I know it’s #1 on every single persons list, but it’s #1 for a reason. It’s the best Halloween song ever.
2. North American Hallowe’en Prevention Initiative – Do They Know it’s Hallowe’en?
If you haven’t heard this song before you are in for a treat. Made up members from Arcade Fire, Beck, Sonic Youth, the Islands, Les Savy Flav, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and also includes David Cross. And it’s a parody song of ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ Amazing. Check the Wikipedia article for more cool info.
3. Screamin’ Jay Hawkins – I Put a Spell on You
There are approximately a million and a half covers of this class, but Screamin’ Jay does it best (for Halloween).
4. Michael Jackson – Thriller
This song is even scarier now that he’s dead (and possibly murdered).
5. Red Lipstique – Drac’s Back
You’re going to hate me for this because ‘Drac’s Back’ is possibly the most addictive Halloween song out there. It just gets stuck in your brain.
6. Creedence Clearwater Revival – Bad Moon Rising
This needs no explanation.
7. Sheb Wooley – The Purple People Eater
Probably the second most beloved, essential Halloween song on the list.
8. Danny Elfman – This is Halloween
The greatest, most clever Halloween movie ever. And screw the Marilyn Manson remake! Just kidding, that is pretty awesome too and is included later on.
9. Tracy Morgan – Werewolf Bar Mitzvah
The most hilarious lyrics ever. This was taken from an episode of 30 Rock.
10. Rob Zombie – Halloween (She’s So Mean)
Probably an odd choice for most, but Rob Zombie’s Halloween mix called Halloween Hootenanny is just so good I had to pull a song from there.
11. Warren Zevon – Werewolves of London
Again, needs no explanation.
12. Vince Guaraldi Trio – Great Pumpkin Waltz
The Trio just makes the best score for Charlie Brown’s Halloween and Christmas specials. This song appears to be tragically missing from many a list on the internet.
13.The Polyphonic Spree – Town Hall Meeting
At an epic 9 minutes this song is a whirlwind of fun.
14. Stevie Wonder – Superstition
Come-on, it’s spooky and groovy!
15. Jill Tracy – Evil Night Together
Probably the first actually scary song on this list.
16. Zacherley – Coolest Little Monster
I have no idea where I first heard this song, and it was a pain to track down the original singer (the Electric Frankenstein version kept coming up) but I love the lyrics and style.
17. Theme From Halloween
Not my favorite movie, but it has my favorite music.
18. Marci Lee and Johnny Otis – Casting My Spell on You
Sounds yummy…..
19. Jonathon Coulton – Re Your Brains
I mean, they really aren’t being unreasonable. We….er…They promised not to eat your eyes.
20. MC Chris – I Want Candy
Remember that’s 612 Warf Avenue. Bring the candy.
Well, that’s the Top 20 greatest Halloween songs of All Time according to one random person on the internet. If you want to look at the rest of the list, follow me after the jump! You can listen to the playlist there as well!
